O’Learys Seafood Restaurant is located at 310 Third Street in the historic Eastport neighborhood of Annapolis. The building that O'Learys occupies was the former residence of Herb Sadler, known locally as Capt’n Sadler. A waterman, who made his living off the Chesapeake Bay, Capt’n Sadler caught oysters in the Bay and then sold them in the fish market on this property. The building that housed the fish market has since been demolished, and is now the sales center for a yacht company.
In the early part of the 20th century, boatyard workers populated Eastport. They could be found designing, building and repairing boats, such as oyster boats or the high end Trumpy yachts. There are still local boat builders, however the residents today are more likely to own a boat, rather than to build one.
Many locals remember purchasing fresh oysters, crabs and fish at Sadler’s market, and O’Learys continues the tradition of providing fresh seafood to the Annapolis community. |
